About the Gospel of Luke
The Gospel of Luke, (Greek: «Κατὰ Λουκᾶν Εὐαγγέλιον»), is the third book of the New Testament and part of the four canonical Gospels. It provides a thorough and sequential narrative of the life, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Like the other synoptic gospels, but unique, Luke emphasizes compassion and forgiveness and the universality of salvation. Jesus had an eye for the marginalized like no one else did, and such groups — women, the poor, social outcasts — are given special prominence, indicating that Jesus kept the same attitude towards people regardless of background or status.
Luke’s Gospel opens with an official-sounding prologue to “Theophilus,” suggesting that there’s a plan to write an orderly and credible account for the record. This introduction, in conjunction with its elegant Greek and historical context, leads some to believe that Luke was an educated Gentile, possibly a doctor, and traditionally considered a companion of the Apostle Paul. His writing shows understanding and a sensitivity to both Jewish and Greco-Roman culture.
The Gospel of Luke is also very carefully structured, not in the sense of composed from a series of thematic essays—it is far too cohesive for that—but in the sense of structuring a well-constructed narrative arc—from the births of John the Baptist and Jesus to the resurrection and ascension. It contains many parables absent from the other Gospels — the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son, for example—reinforcing themes of mercy and divine grace. It is learned, literary, often using parallelism, full of colorful narrative.
In general, Luke portrays Jesus as the universal Savior, especially highlighting themes of joy, prayer, and the influence of the Holy Spirit. This text isn't just about theology; it also tells a historical story, aiming to cultivate faith by depicting the Messiah in a warm and welcoming way.
